VOL. 1, TRACK 15: THOMAS DOLBY, “SHE BLINDED ME WITH SCIENCE”
What does it mean to “blind” someone “with science?” That’s a mystery I’ve been trying to untangle all week, ever since I saw that this track would be coming up for me to review. I have a special interest in the subject right now, I will confide, since I am not-so-secretly IN LOVE with a certain special someone. And I’m wondering if blinding the object of my affection with science would be a good thing… or, perhaps, would he just feel overwhelmed and disgusted by the blinding?
Perhaps we all have a secret desire, way, deep down, to be “blinded with science.” Or, maybe not.
This is a great track and a decent video. I’m still not sure what it means to be “blinded by science,” but I’m going to just go ahead and take a gander, here. It’s like…. when you’re teeming with romance and poetry and all things deep and meaningful and emotional going on inside you, in the name of your special someone. But THEN, the object of your affection says or does something that brings it all down to the level of common interchange, like, you could be their mailman, or a train conductor, or somesuch basic, quotidien nonsense — which makes you feel like you’ve been reduced to merely a scientific data point, in the eyes of your beloved.
BAM! You’ve just been blinded by science — a completely unromantic reality check, smacking you in the face, and reminding you that love is something for other people, not you. That’s as opposed to feeling like your love was actually front-and-center important to the person you love, like some metaphysical fireworks show going off in their heart (on the hour, every hour).
If I’m lucky, I get a few minutes of metaphysical fireworks every day, followed by twelve straight hours of doubt, disbelief, and outright confusion. But maybe that’s just me, to veer so wildly in my self-concept when I’m in love. To go from ecstatic bouts of he loves me to despairing wails of he loves me not.
I’ll give “She Blinded Me With Science” an 8/10 for inspiring me to think so deeply about these issues, and what it means to be in love. Kidding. It’s because it’s a great track, and Thomas Dolby is so freaking cute.
